Career Area of the Week:
How about a JUDGE? JUDGES apply the law and oversee the legal process in courts according to local, state, and federal statutes. Almost all jurisdictions require that anyone appointed or elected a JUDGE to any court be a graduate of an accredited law school and a member of the bar. Federal and state judges are usually required to be lawyers.

Also, take a moment to look at the new radial design/mandalas in the cafeteria windows. These beautiful simulated stained-glass pieces were created by the 6th hour, 7th hour art class. The students’ names are on their creations.

The North High Marching Redskins Color Guard will be hosting a clinic tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the band room at North High. The clinic is open to both boys and girls.

The coroner may employ physicians, pathologists, or forensic pathologists to perform autopsies when necessary.

How about a DIESEL TECHNICIAN? DIESEL TECHNICIANS repair and maintain diesel engines that power transportation equipment, such as heavy trucks, buses and locomotives. Some diesel technicians work on construction equipment, such as bulldozers, cranes and road graders; and farm equipment, such as farm tractors and combines. DIESEL TECHNICIANS may qualify for jobs through on –the-job training, but completion of a formal diesel engine training program after graduation from high school is recommended.

Career Area of the Week:
How about a DIESEL TECHNICIAN? DIESEL TECHNICIANS repair and maintain diesel engines that power transportation equipment, such as heavy trucks, buses and locomotives. Some diesel technicians work on construction equipment, such as bulldozers, cranes and road graders; and farm equipment, such as farm tractors and combines. DIESEL TECHNICIANS may qualify for jobs through on –the-job training, but completion of a formal diesel engine training program after graduation from high school is recommended.

Congratulations to our music students (20 soloist and 5 ensembles) who participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, March 6th at West High School. Students earned a rating (from a I thru a V with the I rating being the highest award). Seven soloists and one woodwind received I ratings and blue ribbons! We are filled with Royal Pride because all our music students earned ribbons for their fine performance!

There will be no school Friday, March 12th thru Friday, March 19th due to Spring Break. Students will return to school Monday, March 22nd. Enjoy your break!

The City of Wichita and the Department of Park & Recreation present the Spring Classic Middle School Basketball league. League practices and plays will run from March 29th – May 10th, 2010 at the Evergreen Recreation Center. The cost is $10 per player and is available to middle school ages 11-14, 6th – 8th grade. Be on the look-out for Fuel Up to Play 60 advisory team members. They will be approaching students in the halls and if the student can correctly answer question about Fuel Up to Play 60, they will receive a prize. Team members will also be out at lunch to give those who wish to participate, walking club forms, which can be used to help keep track of your physical activity. Due to the Fuel Up to Play grant, PVMS will be receiving three tether-ball units in the play area in the near future. Don’t forget to sun in and track your progress on line to be eligible for the Wii and the computer notebook to be given away.

STUCO will sponsor a Saturday movie matinee this Saturday. The movie will begin at 10:00. This week’s movie is G-Force. The movie is open to all students and their families.

After returning from a walk with his dog, he noticed that the dog's coat and his pants were covered with cockleburrs. de Mestral studied the burrs under a microscope and discovered their natural hook-like shape. Congratulations to the Pleasant Valley Chess Team for winning 1st place at the Topeka Collegiate chess tournament last Saturday. All five players (Marleah Mullen, Cameron VanBaal, Dominic Stout-Simmons, Hanah Huber and Katie Bergman) placed in the top twenty. This is the 6th trophy PV chess has brought home this year!

Next week is “Spirit Week” and STUCO will be sponsoring four activities as part of the Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Each activity will cost $1.00. Students who pay for the activity will be given a sticker to place on their id. From the students who have paid and are dressed appropriately, STUCO and the Principals will be voting for the student who best represents the team of each day. That student will be given a prize of $5.00.

How about a LEGAL SECRETARY? LEGAL SECRETARIES perform specialized clerical and administrative duties to assist lawyers in their work. They also ensure efficient operation of the law office and coordinate office activities. Their work requires knowledge of legal terminology, forms and procedures and knowledge of computers and case management. Secretaries may review law journals and assist with legal research.

Most employers require LEGAL SECRETARIES to have knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management programs. The skills a legal secretary will need can be acquired through formal training from high school vocational education programs, business schools, or one to two-year programs in vocational-technical institutes and community colleges.

Federal law requires home health aides to pass a competency test covering areas such as communication skills, observation, reporting and documentation of patient status, reading and recording vital signs, basic infection control, emergency procedures, the physical, emotional and developmental characteristics of patients, personal hygiene and grooming and basic nutrition.

Career Area of the Week:
How about an AIRCRAFT PILOT? AIRCRAFT PILOTS fly planes and helicopters to carry out a variety of tasks. Most pilots transport passengers, cargo and mail, but others may dust crops, direct firefighting efforts, track criminals, monitor traffic, etc. Helicopter pilots are involved in police work, rescue, construction, etc. ALL AIRCRAFT PILOTS who are paid to transport passengers or cargo must have a commercial pilot’s license with an instrument rating issued by the FAA. Applicants must have 250 hours of flight experience. Airline pilots must have an airline transport pilot’s license. Applicants must have 1500 hours of flying experience, including night and instrument flying, and must pass FAA written and flight examinations. Most pilots have a college degree. The armed forces are an important source of trained pilots for civilian jobs. Those without armed forces training may become pilots through flight schools.

Toys 4 Tots will be raffling This is It posters, so bring a toy and get a raffle ticket to win a poster. The mentoring class who brings the most toys will win a pizza party. ~ Mrs. Plotner

Career Area of the Week:
How about a SECRETARY? SECRETARIES are responsible for various administrative and clerical duties. They organize and maintain paper and electronic files and plan and schedule meetings and appointments. They manage projects, conduct research on the internet and provide information by using the telephone, postal mail, or e-mail. Employers increasingly require SECRETARIES to have knowledge of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets and database management. Training for secretaries ranges from high school programs that teach office skills to 1- to 2-year programs in office administration offered by business schools, vo-tec institutes and community colleges. Some skills are learned on the job.

Our 2nd Annual Winter Ball is quickly approaching—Friday, December 18th! Tickets will be $5.00 and will go on sale December 7th! Students must have an ID to enter and cannot be on the “F” list. Students will be voting for 8th grade King/Queen, 7th grade Prince/Princess and 6th grade Courts during mentoring on Friday, December 4th. Don’t forget about the dress code: Gentlemen- Dress pants or dress jeans, nice collared shirt. Ladies- Dress pants with appropriate top or a dress of appropriate length.
