Swiss inventor George de Mestral came up with the idea for Velcro in the early 1940s. After returning from a walk with his dog, he noticed that the dog's coat and his pants were covered with cockleburrs. de Mestral studied the burrs under a microscope and discovered their natural hook-like shape. They became the basis for the two-sided fastener, named for the French words "velour" and "crochet."
